The lights, the cameras, the gowns, the hair; Farouk Systems once again brought a combination of glamour and high fashion to Las Vegas for the 2013 Miss USA Competition. Even before the contestants step onto the stage in front of the live audience and millions of viewers, our talented artists are working hard to bring that “CHI magic” to their looks. Lorena Garcia was selected to represent CHI as a part of the backstage styling team at this year’s show and shares her unique take on the experience.
What would others be surprised to learn about what goes on behind the scenes at Miss USA and Miss Universe shows?
What a lot of people don’t realize is that the girls arrive weeks before the show. We are helping them with everything from photo shoots to interviews. You become each other’s family and become attached to the girls. It’s really emotional. A lot of work goes into preparing for a live show.
What are your “go to” CHI products and tools for backstage styling?
My must haves are the CHI ARC and the CHI Magnifed Volume Finishing Spray. The CHI ARC allows me to create big waves and curls and the finishing spray is awesome because you can use it all throughout the day and layer it on – without causing hair to become too sticky or weighing it down – and it works on all types of hair. The girls always comment on how much they love the smell of it, too.
What is the most rewarding part of working as a backstage stylist at Miss USA?
Having the honor of being one of the stylists chosen to represent the company is very rewarding. So is working with the contestants. We help build them up so that they can go into the competition feeling confident. That is why Miss USA and CHI fit so well together; we both celebrate inner and outer beauty and bring out what is best and beautiful in each of the girls.
What was the top hairstyle trend at Miss USA this year?
The hot thing, that I don’t think will ever go out of style, is loose, bouncy waves. It’s all about lots of hair and beautiful fullness.
What does it take to make it as a backstage stylist?
You need to have a great image so that you can represent the company well. We are there to make the girls feel confident, so you need to look professional and put together. Also, having a positive attitude, making the best out of every situation and being a team player. If you stay positive, anything is possible. I never thought that I’d be doing what I’m doing now. If you work hard year-round and keep your dreams high, then the opportunities will come.
