We recently spent some time with some of rock’s most buzz-worthy band members and found out a few of their dirty (and clean) hair secrets. Read on for their styling tips, product hits and hair confessions!
Good Products Wanted!
When you’re living out of hotels, buses and suitcases, looking great doesn’t always come easy. Oleander lead vocalist Thomas Flowers says, “Quality hair products while on the road are an absolute must!” What are the must-haves for most of the rocker guys we spoke to? A good shampoo, a strong hair spray, and a gel or styling creme with serious hold!
Styling Tip: Everyone, yes EVERYONE, needs a styling product! The right formula adds a bit of texture and prevents strands from looking too “fluffy”. For a lightweight moveable hold, try CHI Man Flexible Styler Active Paste. For a rock-solid formula, check out Radical Style Extreme Glue (seen above with POD’s Noah Bernardo). This hardcore gel spikes up shorter lengths without feeling heavy or greasy. If you’ve got a buzz cut, a little silk-enriched formula like Silk Infusion will keep your scalp in tip-top condition.
Real Men Flat Iron!
Not every guy is born with stick straight hair. Some get a little help from their hot friends. We’re talking flat irons here, and Hollywood Undead’s Danny Murillo and Matthew St. Clair (aka Da Kurlzz) are two guys who aren’t afraid to admit they use ‘em!
Styling Tip: If you’ve got shorter hair, place a comb between your scalp and the iron to avoid getting singed! Use the comb, flush against the side of the iron, to guide it away from the scalp.
Coming Clean About Dirty Hair!
Youngblood Hawke’s Tasso Smith shared this dirty little hair secret: when you’re constantly travelling, you don’t always get to wash your hair. For some, that means hair can get a bit greasy. Tasso likes to keep dry shampoo on hand to keep his hair looking fresh between scrubs. Shinedown’s Zach Myers fessed up that performing usually makes his hair smell like plastic and he’d be freshening it up with a shot of CHI Man Finishing Spray after the show.
Styling Tip: If you don’t use a ton of hair product daily, it’s actually recommended to skip “water washing” your hair every day or two to preserve the natural oils in your scalp. If you’ve got oily skin, using a little dry shampoo on the in-between days will absorb excess oils, eliminate odors and restore texture!
A Little TLC Is Always Appreciated!
With all the products rockers put in their hair, and all the travelling they do through different climates, their hair can get seriously stressed. Ali Hussain, bass player for A Silent Film, fessed up that his locks were definitely feeling dried out. He touched them up with a little Silk Infusion and he’s now digging a softer side of his strands.
Styling Tip: A little goes a long way with silk serums. For short hair, a drop or two should do the trick. Rub the product between hands and lightly run through and over hair.
Guys Can Be Product Junkies!
It’s no secret among members of the Sick Puppies band and crew that lead singer Shimon Moore is a hair product junkie. We heard time and again that he “uses lots of hair stuff” from many of the folks who work with him. Case in point: an hour before hitting the stage, Shim had a hair emergency and sent out an SOS for some hair spray STAT. (Thankfully, we were there to help). Another (not at all surprising) product junkie is Papa Roach front man Jacoby Shaddix. He quizzed us on the strength of the CHI Man Finishing Spray’s hold (he likes his hair stuff STRONG) and grabbed a few extras from our product stash to hold him over for a bit.
Styling Tip: If you’re a big fan of styling products or if you have oily skin, it’s important to use a shampoo formulated to remove build up to help prevent hair follicles from getting clogged (a factor that can contribute to hair loss). CHI Man Daily Active Shampoo thoroughly removes debris and build-up and helps hydrate the scalp while delivering much needed nutrients to the hair.
